Building the Future

Frankfurt Airport is expanding. Terminal 3 is Europe’s largest airport infrastructure project and is currently in the final stage of construction. But much will also be happening in Terminals 1 and 2 over the coming years in order to live up to the motto ‘building the future’. That is because Frankfurt Airport wants to remain what it is: the world’s best-connected air transport hub and a highly attractive location for airlines.

Central areas of Terminal 1 will be completely redesigned in the coming years. As part of "Transforming Terminal 1", the most modern check-in counters and security checkpoints will be installed and ensure fast processes. This will make travel from FRA even faster and more convenient.

When the new Terminal 3 opens, Terminal 2 - which went into operation in 1994 and has, to date, mainly hosted airlines from the Oneworld and SkyTeam alliances - will be totally renovated and modernised. According to current planning, this will take around three years.

The airport will be able to handle up to 19 million more passengers annually after the completion of Expansion Phase 1. 2026 marks the start of a new era for Germany’s largest airport. Departure areas G, H and J will have 33 gates and 100 check-in counters once they are operational. SkyLine will take passengers from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 within 8 minutes.
